Finding help for low income individuals who need dental care is something that doesn’t get as much attention as it should in the debate of improving our current health care system. Many of the low income aid programs currently focus on providing care for the elderly or young children, who are able to get assistance through government funded health insurance programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. However, when it comes to adults, the options are a bit more limited. But luckily, there are still some options available for poor and low income individuals who are in need of dental care.
It is estimated that more then one hundred million people in the U.S do not have dental coverage. This figure consists of both working and non working adults. It is no secret that dental insurance in the U.S can be quite costly. Even for low income individuals who are covered under state funded plans such as Medicaid, they still have a hard time getting a dentist to see them. The reason being: Many dentists will not accept patients who are covered under Medicaid due to their low reimbursement rates. One way to combat this problem is by going to public dental clinics. Although the waiting list may be long, they do typically accept patients covered under Medicaid.
