Activity Holidays Like Surfing on Oahu, Hawaii

Oahu has become one of the most famous places for activity holidays like surfing. As the location boast over 596 defined surfing breaks, more than any other island. This makes it a great place to take a surf holiday as there is a break for every level, from pro riders to complete novices, taking to the water for the first time.

Waikiki, on the south east side of the island provides a break perfect for first time surf holiday surfers, as the slow gentle waves give you a clean wave to get you started.

There are a number of surf shops around Waikiki, offering lessons and surfboard hire so you will never be far away from hitting the waves.

Popular spots such as Queens, named after Queen Liliuokalani and Populars, in Waikiki are often overcrowded due to the local shops constantly giving lessons, but don’t be put off, the surf schools, are a great way to learn in a social environment. Apart from being a great surfing spot the waters around these beaches are great for snorkeling, when the water is calm. In the evenings during the weekends, the town host free movies and everyone is welcome to come and sit and watch. The Sunset on the Beach, event also includes food stalls and bands, so ensure to pop by and try some local delicacies.

For the more advanced surfer, or those wishing to see some amazing surfing action, a trip to the North shore should not be missed. During the winter month’s wave heights can reach over 30ft and attracts top named surfers and is host to many surfing contests. Waimea Bay, Sunset beach and Pipeline draw big crowds during these months where wipeouts and broken boards are a daily occurrence to those surfers brave enough to paddle out.

Pipe, or Pipeline is only a winter break, when the strong southwesterly swells punch up onto the beach with some amazing force.
